Mikal Cronin has been on Moksha’s radar for a long time now starting with his Ty Segall feature artist playlist and ultimately ending up on Episode 32 of the Pruning Session. His West Coast garage and psych rock revival sound has established itself as a pillar of contemporary music. On Episode 32, Moksha endeavored to bring me into the fold with Cronin’s story telling. It worked well enough for me to include him on a list of potential concerts when my friends and I decided to begin the Audio Bonsai Concert Series here in the Twin Cities where he caught one of my friends attention as well. ‘Gold’ is the song that first caught our attention, embedded below. Check out the rest of Cronin’s most recent album, MCIII, embedded from Spotify at the bottom of the post.
The Cairo Gang will open the show. Their last solo studio release was the ‘Tiny Rebels’ EP from 2013, just before we started Audio Bonsai so this will be my first exposure to their work. However, frontman Emmett Kelly has recorded with favorites of mine, Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy and Angel Olsen so I’m pretty excited to see them. ‘Tiny Rebels’ is embedded via Spotify at the bottom of the post, but he has also released a couple of singles this year. ‘Ice Fishing’ is embedded below.
They will be playing at venerable Twin Cities venue, the Turf Club on Thursday, September 10. Much to our dismay, the three of us have not been to the Turf Club in the year since it reopened after a renovation. Starting with this show, our next three planned events will be at the Turf Club. We are very excited to break the new renovations in.
