A Tribe Called Red’s blend of club music, hip hop, and indigenous North American music featuring the talents of Yasiin Bey, Narcy, and Black Bear, topped both curators’ top ten lists to earn the top spot among our weekly recommendations. We were both blown away in 2011 by their ‘Electric Pow Wow Drum’ and that has not changed in the intervening years. They aren’t the only old favorite releasing new music this week as The Handsome Family, Die Antwoord and Dawes are in our Songs of the Day with Against Me!, Mykki Blanco and Kishi Bashi just missing out on that status as well. That means we still have a host of brand new (at least to us) artists that we recommend you check out, too. See all of our recommendations below or play the list at the top of the post.
Want to discover what we missed? Listen to the full list of Fresh Cuts and tell us what we got wrong. Or, if one of us more closely aligns with your personal tastes, check out the ballots of Jesse, or Moksha to listen to only their favorites. The top seven in the combined scoring and also get included in our Songs of the Day playlist on Spotify. Honorable Mentions are songs that also get votes, but don’t quite make the songs of the day.
If you would like to keep up to date on our weekly recommendations without having to look for each week’s new playlists, we have a couple for you to subscribe to. The Curator Picks: ReFresh playlist will be reloaded with our selections as soon as we finish voting. If you’re too impatient for that, or just like to explore on your own, the Fresh Cuts: ReFresh list is the one for you. The Fresh Cuts list is our selection of 60+ tracks from new EPs and LPs on Spotify that we review to pick our favorites. You can also keep track of the songs of the day for the whole year here, or revisit our picks from 2015 and 2014.
