AudioBonsai.com was started with the intention of exploring the world of music and highlighting artists that might otherwise be hard to find. As fathers and husbands with busy work lives, we had gotten away from our passion for music which lead to us beginning to think things like “New music just isn’t as good anymore.” A clear sign we weren’t looking hard enough to find music to love. We figured there must be scores of people in a similar situation and we wanted to help them as well as the artists that deserve their attention. So just how do we do that?
Songs of the Day
Every week we produce a list of seven to nine (depending on whether there was a two or three way tie for the final spot) songs from EPs and LPs released the previous week. Our three curators produce their own top ten lists and after these are scored the top vote getters are put in our Songs of the Day: ReFresh playlist. Subscribe on Spotify to be notified when the list is updated. You can also see the in the menu bar. We’ve kept all of our songs of the day since we started the practice at the beginning of 2014. Review all of the songs of the day from 2014, 2015, and so far in 2016.
As mentioned above, the curators compile top ten lists. If you’re still hungry for more or you discover one curator’s taste more closely matches your own, you can see all of the songs we liked from a week on the Listening Posts. You can also subribe to the Curators Picks: Refresh list on Spotify that gets updated every week with all of the choices made by the curators scored from first to honorable mentions. We make a post here each week containing all of these lists and all of the songs we were choosing from.
The Fresh Cuts are the songs that we choose our top tens from. There are 60 or more songs representing their releases from the 3000+ new EPs and LPs added to Spotify each week. Yes, even with that criteria, pulling from every genre we can, we’re still only getting a sampling of the music that comes out each and every week. We stick to EPs and LPs so that when you do find something to like, there are at least a few more songs available to listen to. If you want just one list to subscribe to that will get updated every week, check out the Fresh Cuts: ReFresh list on Spotify.

Make sure to follow us on Facebook or Twitter. We really do want to help people find artists to love and just as importantly help artists doing interesting work find people to support them in making more art. If you think we’re doing a good job, please tell an artist you hear about from us where you heard about them and tell your friends where they can learn about great new artists. The louder our voice gets, the more we can help. Thanks for visiting and we hope you find an artist to love while you’re here!
The Pruning Session
Much of the above used to be captured in podcast form by the two original curators, Moksha and Jesse. With growing commitments and higher ambitions, Jesse decided to get out of the podcasting biz. Adam came on to pick up his mantle and in addition to contributing as an Audio Bonsai curator, Adam and Moksha (a.k.a. Justin) became the Song Spotters on the 2 Guys Talking podcasting network. Here them talk about their top five songs each and every week. Jesse still manages to contribute a Lyrical Lookout dive into lyrics most weeks.
When AudioBonsai.com started, we focused on providing a weekly list inspired by one artist. Each list mixed much of the artists work with those that inspired them as well as contemporaries playing with similar themes. The idea was to provide context for an artist you might not have heard of before. While we loved doing these lists, we simply ran out of time to keep up with them once we started the podcast. Maybe someday we’ll get back to making them, perhaps even in podcast form, but in the meantime you can check out some of these old chestnuts if that sounds like something you’d like to hear.
